Italy -> Apulia

Geographical Outline of Apulia
Apulia is a varied region:
coming from the north you will be amazed by the
boundless Capitanata plains (which were the
granaries of Italy m Roman times), along the
coast to the Margherita di Savoia Saltpans (the
biggest in Europe), going down further South the area
becomes arid around Murgia. Here a karst
phenomenon created the Castellana grottoes,
while a little further down, there is a town which
looks tike it came straight out of a fable: "Alberobello"
with its typical white houses with "upside-down cone"
roofs. Not far from here there is an attraction that
always wiles its charm, especially on the little ones,
the Fasano zoo safari.
It takes time to get to
know and understand Apulia even to those who
have put down roots there; one has to get used to the
slow and typically Mediterranean rhythm of life, but
also to the fast pace of the Levantine nature. One has
to travel all over it, walk along its streets, let
oneself down its bowels and, climb up its steepest
ridges.
The flatness of Apulia is a mere tale, as one
can tell from the environmental features and the "sub-regions"
characterized by an unquestionable historical and
cultural homogeneity: Capitanata and
Gargano, Terra di Bari, Murge,
Valle d'Itria and
Salento, are not just geographical names but
rather the tesserae of an enchanting mosaic created by
history in a cultural melting pot.

A mosaic made of sand and
stone, lush mountains and fields of wheat, orchards
and olive groves as far as the eye can see, rocky
hills, silent lagoons and subterranean caves, moulded
and modified by man, who has succeeded in the course
of time in making this soil - a soil probably destined
to perennial drought - fertile and rich, and who built
dolmens and menhirs, castles and cathedrals,
abbeys and sanctuaries, museums and
palaces, villas and farms, towers
and trulli on it.
Today, those who choose to visit Apulia will
still find all this and much more, because Apulia
is a land of arts, civilizations, colours, traditions
and charming atmospheres for all seasons.
